2016 was a momentous year for Perugia Press. We celebrated our 20th anniversary with a slate of readings, craft conversations, and events from November 10-15. Perugia poets came from far and wide to help us mark this milestone, and friends and supporters of the press attended in droves to be present for poetry. Mid-November was a wonderful time to explicitly hear from and champion women’s voices, always our mission at Perugia Press.
Additionally, Founding Director Susan Kan stepped down as editor/director, and board member Rebecca Hart Olander became the new editor/director. Susan Kan remains on the board, and we are so grateful for her continued involvement as the press moves into its next phase.
2017 finds us continuing our goal to give a leg-up to women at the beginning of their publishing careers. We are in the midst of reading manuscripts submitted to the 2017 Perugia Press Prize, and we’ll have news of the results by April 1. The deadline for our annual contest fell just after Election Day, and each collection that came in to us was a balm and was received as a vibrant acknowledgment of the power of women’s voices and of the ability of poetry to speak out and speak up. Thank you to each woman who sent us her poetry; we are with you, we are honored to read your work, and we appreciate you standing with Perugia Press when considering where to send your words out into the world.
We will be traveling to AWP in D.C. this year from February 8-February 11, where we’ll continue to commemorate our anniversary. We hope you’ll visit us at our booth at the book fair (see the Events page for details). We also have a beautiful new chapbook, Brilliance, Spilling, that was released at our anniversary events in November and which showcases the work of each of our 20 poets.
During this special time in the life of the press, we would love a vote of confidence from our fans and supporters in the form of a donation. Perugia Press relies on collaboration with our community to continue our good work. We appreciate you contributing what you can, which also happens when you read our books, volunteer for the press, submit your manuscripts, and participate in Perugia Press events. Thank you!
